Drifting Faraday patterns under localised driving

چکیده

Abstract Physical systems undergoing spontaneous pattern formation are governed by intrinsic length scales that may compete with extrinsic ones, resulting in exceptional spatiotemporal behaviour. In this work, we report experimental and theoretical evidence spatial nonuniformity sets Faraday-wave patterns motion, which noticeable the zigzag drift dynamics exhibited their wave crests. We provide a minimal model succeeds characterising growth of localised under nonuniform parametric driving. Furthermore, derivation accounts for symmetry-breaking nonlinear gradients show source mechanism, comes into play right after system has crossed secondary bifurcation point. Numerical solutions governing equations match our findings predictions. Our results advance understanding behaviour induced generic extended far from equilibrium.

The frequency-dependence of drifting subpulse patterns

Drifting subpulse patterns in pulsar signals are frequently interpreted in terms of a model in which a rotating ring of sparks on the polar cap gives rise to emission from regions of the magnetsophere connected to the sparks by dipolar magnetic field lines. The spacing of drift-bands in time depends on the circulation rate of the polar cap pattern, but to first order the longitudinal phase depe...

Enhanced Faraday pattern stability with three-frequency driving.

We report experimental observations of enhanced stability of quasipatterns and superlattice patterns in a vertically oscillated, deep viscous fluid layer with the addition of a third driving frequency. With two-frequency driving in the ratios 4:5 and 6:7, 12-fold quasipatterns and type-I superlattice patterns appear, respectively, as a secondary instability for a range of relative phases and am...

Faraday patterns in bose-Einstein condensates.

Temporal periodic modulation of the interatomic s-wave scattering length in Bose-Einstein condensates is shown to excite subharmonic patterns in the atom density through a parametric resonance. The dominant wavelength of the spatial structures is primarily selected by the excitation frequency but also affected by the depth of the spatial modulation via a nonlinear resonance. These phenomena rep...

Multifrequency control of Faraday wave patterns.

We show how pattern formation in Faraday waves may be manipulated by varying the harmonic content of the periodic forcing function. Our approach relies on the crucial influence of resonant triad interactions coupling pairs of critical standing wave modes with damped, spatiotemporally resonant modes. Under the assumption of weak damping and forcing, we perform a symmetry-based analysis that reve...

Snakes, ladders, and isolas of localised patterns

Stable localised roll structures have been observed in many physical problems and model equations, notably in the 1D Swift–Hohenberg equation. Reflection-symmetric localised rolls are often found to lie on two “snaking” solution branches, so that the spatial width of the localised rolls increases when moving along each branch. Recent numerical results by Burke and Knobloch indicate that the two...
